The updated version of the Hong Kong Roadmap on Popularisation of Electric Vehicles clearly sets out to transform gas stations into high-speed charging stations or hybrid fuel-and-charging stations to shore up the shortfalls in new energy infrastructure.

On 31 August 2026, Hong Kong’s first dedicated high-speed charging station converted from a traditional gas station — the PIT Ultra Supercharging Station — officially went into operation. On the launch day, Mr. Tse Chin-wan, Secretary for Environment and Ecology of the HongKong SAR Government, together with Legislative Council members, Hong Kong deputies to the National People’s Congress, and distinguished guests from SINOPEC and CLP Power, officiated at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Mainstream media including TVB News covered the commissioning, demonstrating the HongKong SAR Government’s high priority for the green transformation of new energy infrastructure.
As Hong Kong’s first fully renovated dedicated high-speed charging station rebuilt on the original site of a traditional gas station, this project is also the largest dedicated high-speed charging station approved by the HongKong SAR Government, marking a milestone transformation from traditional gas station to green-energy supercharging station. The project lays solid hardware foundations for upgrading Hong Kong’s green mobility and interconnecting charging facilities across the Greater Bay Area. The station’s power distribution system is supported by customized technical solutions of 3D Wound Core Prefabricated Substation developed by Haihong Electric, effectively resolving charging station power distribution challenges brought by Hong Kong’s land scarcity, high-load charging, and cross-regional compatibility with different vehicle models.
Why was Haihong selected for the PIT Ultra Supercharging Station in Kowloon Bay?
As a benchmark project of Hong Kong’s gas-station-to-supercharging-station transformation, the Kowloon Bay PIT Ultra Supercharging Station boasts core strengths of high performance, full compatibility and wide coverage. Equipped with supercharging devices of up to 600kW and an intelligent power dispatching system, 30% of its parking bays adopt cutting-edge full liquid-cooled charging technology, supporting 800V and above high-voltage vehicles. It can raise vehicle state of charge from 20% to 80% within 10 minutes. There are 20 DC fast-charging bays in total. Even under full-load simultaneous operation, each bay can maintain stable charging power above 100kW, completely solving the common pain point of power drop when multiple vehicles charge concurrently at traditional charging stations.

In terms of adaptability, the station caters to both local and cross-border motorists. Eight bays are dual-fitted with GB/T (China National Standard) and CCS2 (Combined Charging System 2) charging guns, precisely serving cross-border EVs under the “Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles” scenario. Meanwhile, the station pioneers dedicated charging bays for large vehicles to support new-energy double-decker buses and other public transport EVs. Its coverage is broader than ordinary charging stations, greatly expanding the service boundary of Hong Kong’s public charging infrastructure.

This gas-station conversion project operates under special working conditions. Constrained by Hong Kong’s limited land availability, the station site has tight construction space, imposing extreme requirements on power distribution equipment in terms of footprint, heat dissipation, stability and load capacity. Traditional prefabricated substation solutions with laminated core transformers suffer from bulky size, high operating temperature rise, high energy consumption, weak impact resistance and short service life. They cannot fit the compact layout of the station or support full-time high-load operation, failing to meet the high-frequency, high-voltage and instantaneous high-power charging conditions of supercharging stations.
The customiszd 3D Wound Core Prefabricated Substation by Haihong Electric precisely matches Hong Kong’s special infrastructure scenarios and becomes the linchpin for project delivery. Adopting a lightweight and compact integrated design, the equipment perfectly fits limited space. Its unique 3D wound core structure enables uniform temperature distribution of the transformer. Paired with a dedicated heat dissipation system, it substantially cuts operating temperature rise, reduces equipment failures caused by high temperatures and extends service life. For safety performance, the equipment adopts circular disc windings and composite insulation. The total mass of combustible materials is 85% lower than traditional equipment, delivering outstanding fire prevention and explosion-proof performance. In addition, it features strong overload capacity and ample safety redundancy, which can sustain stable full-load operation and instantaneous high-load charging surges, ensuring all-round safe and efficient operation of the supercharging station.
